Yup, sounded like a dental issue. He tries to blame it on a friend sound card at the beginning. But you can't fake talking like you've got poorly fitting dentures in the bottom of your mouth.

"I slept through my oral surgeon appointment to pull this rotting tooth out of my mouth" is such a quintessentially Spoony thing to do.

It's not just sodas that rot your teeth. Booze has a lot of sugar in it too. Alcoholics usually have awful teeth. His oversleeping, general appearance, gin nose, wasted eyes and perpetual bitterness make me think of an alcoholic more than anything else.
