I think this whole TVTrops mentality was birthed form the same kind of autism as the one responsible for conspiracy theories. These people are so insecure that they need to put labels on everything. Labels are your friend. They explain things in easy terms, and make the world less scary as a result.

It was distilled autism no matter when you looked at it. There was so much spergery in Troper Tales where people were posting ShitThatDidntHappen.txt, Fetish Fuel where literally every frame of media was some dude's kink, etc. It was only slightly redeeming early on when it was casual before they believed what they were doing was respectable so they started renaming entries to remove quotes and references to other shows and the forums became full of pretentious weebs who could only speak in Whedon snark (while still salivating over lolis, but ironically). Channel Awesome contributors using it for "research" was the beginning of the end for it.
