Almost every good slasher series has that one weird early sequel.
Video games do this sometimes, too (see Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2).

Often of the still good variety. Also goes for Hellraiser 2, Aliens and Terminator 2.
Odd prequels, often misunderstanding the identity of the IP but not bad.
For vidya, Quake 2 and Silent Hill 2 are great examples of a horror sequel doing it.
The real shit usually comes after that.

Final Fantasy 2, the NES wanted sequels to not “feel the same” so they did those weird departures. Compare it to how Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 evolved.

immediately after the odd sequel.
SH3 was actually a good return to form. Despite being a good game if SH2 had just been a standalone title, it hadn't done his irreversible damage to the franchise.
SH2 ruined
directly every single game after 3, especially after 4.
