Honest truth is rights holders are watching TFS like a hawk with this project which, as you guys noted, is a throwaway localization. TFS doesn't want this to be a parody project, so I am predicting they go the other way. They go super fucking literal in the translation. They keep 'sempais' and 'chans' and 'kuns' and it will sound like weeaboo trash in the end.

I'm not going to defend all localizations... but I will defend the practice of localization. You want a wider audience? Make a series palletable to that audience. You'd be better off localizing something that doesn't rely on japanese culture as a crutch to start off with, but the point remains. If it wasn't for localization, TFS wouldn't exist.

And yes, I do predict their first localization job is them doing a literal fucking translation and completely forgetting the localization part.

I don't speak any languages well, but I do speak a bit of more than one and the first thing you learn is to avoid too-literal translations. I don't mean google translate or babelfish-tier translations, but even a literal translation that's properly formed is often far too stiff and imprecise to convey the essence of meaning. It's not about what the 1:1 words are, but what the intent behind them is.

TFS are fuckups. The best thing they have going for themselves is some fandub of someone else's content, which they're making money off somehow. This dub job will be a good chance for them to prove that they're capable of working a real job. Or not. Probably not.

A horribly nerdy example was star trek 6.

The actor playing the bad guy said the Klingon translation of "to be or not to be" had no bite in Klingon. It was literally translated as "to exist or not to exist". They retranslated it to "to proceed or not proceed", which sounded better.

Language context gets so fucked up in translation. It's something I never think about, buy it does.

I really hope they go the word for word route and obliterate all context of the show. Please God let this happen.
