There was something about there being a gunman in the script or something? If you look at the background during that final scene, you can see a guy moving around being all shifty. That's supposed to be the guy who shoots Tony.
Then again I haven't watched or really thought about that show in nearly ten years.

That was the most cringeworthy piece of shit I've ever seen, and also didn't Tony Soprano get killed at the end of The Sopranos? Wasn't that the theory?
That's what a lot of people think, but it's never been confirmed... heck, the showrunner (David Chase) has refused to give an answer as to what happened in the finale. The most definite answer people have been able to drag out of him is "There's more than one way of looking at the ending. That's all I'll say." (exact quote)
Quite frankly, I think they just had no idea how to go about ending the series, so they just abruptly ended it so they didn't have to think of anything, and theories like "he died at the end" were just a way of fans trying to create the finality that the writers themselves didn't want to bother with.
With Gandolfini actually dead, 'Tony died at the end' is really the only acceptable theory
