I'm surprised they didn't just go with "Bunnie the Rabbit". I guess this was before Sanic got an actual canon rabbit character, but the "Name the Animal" theme is not exactly new in the franchise.
Well, the name came from the TV series, not the comics. You'd have to take it up with the people who made that. Though at the time the TV series was created, I think the only "Name the Animal" was Sonic himself. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (which introduced Knuckles) hadn't been released yet.
Also the world "deep worldbuilding" of Archie Sanic is so bonkers that I'm almost 100% certain that Ken Penders was born in the wrong generation. He'd fight right in with contemporary deviantArt losers.
Honestly, a lot of his earlier work in the series was pretty decent. But he got a lot worse as he went on, and his significantly worse later stories are the main thing he's remembered for in the series. Well, that and the whole lawsuit thing.
Though, Ken Penders gets a bit more credit (or blame) than he deserves when it comes to the series, as a lot of things in it, even during his run, weren't his ideas. For example, that goofy "Mobius is actually Earth in the far far future" plot point? That was introduced by another writer named Karl Bollers who for whatever reason has never received as much attention as Ken Penders despite probably having about as much influence on the comic in total. I guess he just never got into the same kind of wacky real-life antics as Ken Penders did.
