I hadn't realized that was no longer the case until recently and deleted mine.
Not only did I have to create a Google+ account for my old YT account, but the Google+ account itself now somehow has a YT account that's separate from my old one.

I've deleted a lot of Google accounts over the years. As I recall they give you a list of services you want to delete, so it's possible to delete the G+ account and leave the YouTube account intact

Yes, when I did it it noted that no videos would be removed. It said that comments I had made on videos during the time I had Google+ would be deleted, but who cares.
All my videos are there and the monetization is still intact.
