Transformers was garbage since the 80's. The difference between Bay's brand of shit and the 80's Transformers is that Bay is a fucking sociopath and his Transformers movies, along with being completely incoherent, reflect that.
Beast Wars you pleb!
Yeah, you got me there. Code of Hero in particular was a great episode.
And at least old Transformers had actual character designs, not some weird, almost Non-Euclidian mess of metal bits that roughly resemble a humanoid-ish being.

Animated too. it had also had stylized designs (some worked some didn't), it also tried new things, also gave the characters new personalities and made the conflict less white and black
Oh and the Japanese opening was really good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GDArLUf2E

I'll explain Transformers like I explain any "Why did people watch that back in the '80s?" TV question.
That was as good as TV got at the time, and TV was one of our only entertainment options.
Most of our cartoons were saccharine, poorly written, poorly animated crap. (See Challenge of the Gobots for example.)
Transformers and G.I. Joe were about as good as it got. The only '80s cartoons that could possibly surpass them are Season 1 of DuckTales and Season 1 (SatAM and Syndicated) of The Real Ghostbusters.
The sad thing is that I watched more Gobots than Transformers back in the day (aka like, I dunno, 5 Gobots episodes and not a single Transformers one?). Fuck me did the main villain have a lame "transformation".
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Tonka answer to Transformers, it lasted only a few years before Hasbro bought Tonka and toys have made by Bandai still in 2015.
I think Gobots was probably more popular outside the US
The American Gobots were not very good, like way too cheesy http://tgr59ca.tripod.com.gobobotschara ... sodesguide
Oh fuck me i see why it has stayed, even i have to say Japanese Transformes look better than that
