The main difference is that Wrath of Khan had fuck-all to do with The Motion Picture in terms of story. You can't really do that with an Episode VIII.

TLJ was already underway when the world realized what a piece of shit TFA was. IX could conceivably be a better movie for it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I only heard about fans wanting to make Finn and Poe a thing, but why not to make Rey trans and not forget about aces, let's make Kylo asexual while we're at it. Because Star wars always was about sexuality and gender.

They'll probably give Rey a lesbian girlfriend by Episode 9 as well and call it "brave progressiveness" or some shit, going the Korra route.

They would have to change her into a selfish, ungrateful bitch first. Which is possible, like Korra she was able to use the force quite easily without any training. It all depends on if she is able to accept a (presumably) straight white cis male as her master. If they'll go with "I don't need no man", then it will probably go to shit.
