The other option was capitulation and you know that wasn't going to happen.

Hypothetical question: are there places with the resources they wanted they could have targeted early on, get the resources and then have a better change at the war? Sorry i don't really know too much about what resources are in that region of the world

Not sure about that. Their big problem was that the USA just had way more resources and was basically bound to win eventually. What the Japanese military tried to do was hit the USA so hard and fast that they'd figure a war would not be worth it. They did a similar thing with Russia before that.
Their big problem however was that their military was run by autists who kept insisting that their keikakus will eventually work if they try hard and long enough. They tried intricate ambushes that almost never worked, and even if someone fell for it they found a way out.
Also the whole kamikaze pilot thing was retarded. Could've worked in the beginning to scare the shit out of the Americans, but the tactic would've eventually caused them to run out of pilots.
Another huge, huge taboo in Japan is discussing Hirohito's role in the war. The official story is that the Emperor (somehow) had no idea what was going on and that his subordinates were all to blame for everything. Tenno Heika was as innocent as an angel.

Kamikaze was a last ditch desperation tactic towards the end of the war, and very few of them were even successful attacks.

They just figured that the USA would attack them eventually and what would harm them the most would've been the pacific flotilla. It was a preemptive strike. Capitulation wasn't an option but would likely have been the most reasonable approach.

Do you Germans have a high regard for the Japanese because of the Tripartite Pact? I know that the Japanese have a special regard for Germany. That's why they will have "GoodNazi" characters in media and a generally flippant approach to portraying Nazis. I saw a Japanese kid with the Nazi swastika on his skateboard and the flag being sold in stores along other national flags.
Here's a lovely Japanese ditty "Banzai Hitlerjugend" from yesteryear. (Youtube blocked in USA because of "copyright" claimed by JVC Victor. Pretty sure anything made under the Empire of Japan is public domain.)

"High regard" for Japan is mostly reserved for weeb stuff. Digimon was huge here, as were all of the Big Three (even though Bleach never aired anywhere, Naruto was shoddily censored from day one, and One Piece was abso-fucking butchered for like two arcs before a more sane channel took over) and the DragonzBallz of course. Though there are barely any channels left who actually air animu anymore. It's all manga and DVDs these days.
Mainstream media appreciation for Glorious Nippon starts and ends with Godzilla. Maybe also Kurosawa flicks of you're older, though I dunno how much those dubs sold back then.
(Oh, also Power Rangers, but that only sorta counts.)
EDIT: Oh wait, we also used to make fun of their silly game shows for a long time. We eventually stopped as our own shows became even more retarded.

I appreciate the old alliance but besides that? Nope. Most Germans have no opinion about Japan. Maybe that they are weird. Japan today is a shadow of it's former self. Much like Germany, really.
