How did it come to such an extreme flood anyway?

It rained torrentially in the central region of the state, where most rivers' beds are located. That water flowed downstream and, combined with the torrential rain we got, caused flood protection systems everywhere to be overwhelmed, because they were projected for less water - based on previous great floods of 1941 and 1965. For example, in my city the flood barriers were build to support 8.1 meters, but water rose up to 8.3 meters. Keep in mind it never had been nearly that bad before, this is unprecedented shit.

I assume most of the extreme weather events we're seeing around the world are linked to climate change. I'm not saying it's all entirely human-caused or reversible, but my area has seen unprecedented weather in the last couple years. The heat dome was absolute insanity. 116F for multiple days in a row. We were one of the hottest spots on the entire planet for that week or however long it was. We were tying with places like Death Valley and Saudi Arabia.
This year so far has been unseasonably cold. We're supposed to jump from around 50F averages to 80F in the span of a day. We've had very few 70-degree days so far.

Over 8 metres is nuts! That's two semi trucks stacked on top of another.
I may be far right wing, or at least what counts for that these days, but I'm not a climate change denier. Numbers don't lie.
I'm also pretty sure that human CO2 production doesn't help. I just think that one should logically start reducing it where there is an atypically high output of it. Namely China and, to a lesser degree, India.
If you wanted to reduce alcohol consumption, you'd start with the alcoholics that slam a bottle of vodka a day, not the granny that has a dram of Grand Marnier on Sunday.
Anyway, nows the time for the Socialist faggot to shine with catastrophe relief!

My cousin married well and is able to afford to have kids. They come visit a couple times a year. It was a lot of fun when they were little. But now they're 10 and 7 and obsessed with "screens". It's really sad.
They basically just ignore us now when we visit them and just play video games. These modern games are very annoying to listen too, by the way. Very annoying sound effects and music.
I know my dad and grandparents always talked crap about video games. I don't want to be like them. But I think the high difficulty level of those old games prevented us from getting so engrossed and obsessed. We'd ragequit from the game cheating and go outside and play.

I spent the last two days in my houses with my brother, to guard our stuff from looters. There's an improvised neighborhood militia trying to keep everything safe, but there's only so much the can do.
Two nights in complete darkness (save for candlelight and eventually cellphone light, as little as possible to conserve battery charge), listening to shots being fired around you, it's a pretty intense experience.
Water level dropped enough that we could get out with the car (thankfully it wasn't flooded) and come to a place with power and water to take a shower. Hopefully things will start to get better soon.

So the houses weren't flooded too badly?

Don't shitpost too much, though. We don't want your battery running out when you'd need it most (likely during a marauder siege).

Thankfully, no. I was pretty pessimistic because a few blocks down the neighborhood, water rose up to the ceiling, but somehow it didn't affect us too much. It's not like we live on top of a hill or something that would make you say, "water will never flood here!".
We're still not out of the hook, however. Weather forecast is of more heavy rain from Friday to Tuesday, followed by a sudden drop of temperature that will surely wreak havoc and kill people who are being sheltered and lost their winter clothing. Still not sure if water won't rise again and hit us hard this time. It will certainly slow down the water flow because the lakes where our river flows into will be flooded pretty hard, and the South wind bringing the cold will also slow down the water going downstream.
Don't worry, I only shitpost when I'm 100% fully charged and with everything else I need to be done, done.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 5:12 pmDon't shitpost too much, though. We don't want your battery running out when you'd need it most (likely during a marauder siege).

Oh right, you have winter. Easy to forget for a European.
Well, that's at least partially good news. Not that any amount of water damage is good but it could always be worse.
We had a severe storm flood towards the end of last year. Not crazy on hight but northern Germany is as flat as the Netherlands.
Bankrupted a few businesses and in one city a damn broke. I was involved in the cleanup directly. Two houses were hit the worst. Over two metres under water. Some dude owned one house, his father the other.
I've never seen a guy with a more "So absolutely fucking done with all this shit"-look on his face as that man.
You can't even properly blame anyone is the worst thing.
