English Breakfast is absolutely meant to be drank with milk or cream but works nicely without it.
To me, the black tea that works best without anything is Darjeeling. But only second flush. As you seem to dislike the mild teas, you should go for that as well. First flush is the milder harvest. I find that to be awfully weak.

I definitely want to try some Darjeeling and Ceylon black teas.

Since I wasn't raised in yurope, I never tried drinking tea with milk. It just isn't done here. I do want to make some chai eventually, and try to figure out the right proportions on milk tea. Maybe make some hong kong milk tea.

The Friesian tea style is usually a strong Assam blend that is drank with a large rock candy and a tea spoon of heavy cream. Very important is that it isn't stirred.

The bongs go absolutely mental on the milk sometimes. I've seen guys drink what more resembles milk with some tea than the other way around.

Tea Earl Gray Hot is quite nice. It's been some years since I've had any. The bergamot flavor is pleasant enough. I also had some "lady grey" which was rather weak but tasty. Of course the "woman" version is inferior and lacking in flavor. Make of that what you will. Had some Ceylon black tea which I quite enjoyed.

Earl Gray is absolutely supposed to be drunk with milk. I find it enjoyable enough without but its better with.
No clue about Lady Gray. It's supposed to be a milder version, which is why I never tried it.

Ask the British. They invented tea for the western world (by stealing it from China.) The Queen decries all tea must be consumed with milk and/or crumpets.
SpoilerShow
The real answer is Assam black teas are very bold, dark, earthy and astringent. Especially if you overbrew it (as the British do,) then the taste will probably be too bitter to drink without something to cut that flavor. Milk contains natural sugars. Combining smooth bitterness with sweetness is the same principle behind chocolates.
I have yet to try milk tea. I'm not going to make it myself at home first. I want to go to a place that serves a proper milk tea in the correct measurements and proportions. That or make some Chai and follow the directions very carefully. I don't want the tea equivalent of those gay "coffees" you can get at Starbucks that are 90% milk, artificial flavors and sugar with 10% coffee.

The key is not to consume coffee at all. Ever. Have some respect for your taste buds!
