Re: Star Whores: Diverse Agenda
Have any of you guys seen it yet? I'd seriously trust you guys more than YouTube shills and RT. I trust RLM too, but they take forever to get their reviews out.
EDIT:
MIdnight's Edge review:
Here's another review that praises the Luke/Rey/Kylo plot, but says the sideplots with the diversity characters are filler that bog down the film.

There's a "Fembusters 2016" situation happening on Rotten Tomatoes right now. The disparity between critics and user reviews is very striking. 93% from critics vs. 63% from 58,936 users and counting. It may indeed revolve around the issues of Snoke's premature death, the SJW tones involving Rey's bullshit origin, the mostly pointless casino chapter, and how the film essentially butchered Luke Skywalker's character progression from the Original Trilogy by turning him into a spiteful spineless asshole.

Additionally, it's worse on Metacritic. 86 from critics and 5.4 from users.

I wanna know how much the critics and shills were paid off by Disney.

Re: Star Whores: Diverse Agenda
Some of it absolutely is shilling.
But I even do it myself right after I see these Star Wars movies. There's always some part of the movie that was enjoyable.
And then there's this little voice in the back of your head that says, "Yes, but what about that midichlorians scene?" "And what about that scene what Jar-Jar got farted on?" and you ignore that voice because you don't want to be a "nitpicking whiney fanboy."
So I would say most people, especially Americans, are too emotionally invested in these movies and you will not get an accurate review. I mean, how many years did it take for the Mr. Plinkett review to come out after The Phantom Menace? That was the first honest review of the movie that I ever saw.

Re: Star Whores: Diverse Agenda
I have, and I like it. I heard the criticisms regarding TFA and A New Hope and I was sitting there noting any plot beats from Empire that might come up.
There are two moments specifically that will merit the raising of an eyebrow, and backlash will be understandable, but even then the context is different. To go and call it a reskin of Empire is disingenuous.
The movie's pretty well paced, it looks fucking gorgeous, Johnson's clearly an adept visual stylist, and the movie handles its ensemble well.
That having been said, I have questions/statements:
-Space Leia has already been shown in this thread. The film never offers an explanation for what happens and we never see her use the Force again. Its what Doge would have called a "big-lipped Alligator moment" way back when. This is made into more of the mess by the fact that Leia only really gets maybe two good moments after that, *and* not killing her when the bridge got blown up robbed Carrie Fisher of an organic exit (from what I'm readying, everything points to there being a timeskip and her dying at an unspecified point during that). All I got to ask is...why?
-Captain Phasma shows up again. She captures Finn and his love interest. They break free. She and Finn have a fight. Finn wins and she falls to her death in burning fire. That's fucking ridiculous because even when they were marketing Force Awakens they were making a big stink out of getting this lady from Game of Thrones. She's in TFA for maybe 10 minutes and might be in Last Jedi for even less. Little to no insight into her character. Ok. Again, why?
-In the third act, Luke is trolling Emo Ren and its honestly a pretty fun scene. I was wondering why they didn't duel. I mean we've done Rey and Kylo already (and there will probably be a redux in Ep 9), so the options are limited. I'm willing to chalk this up to "Johnson saw the Plinkett bideo for Episode II, noted down the parts where Plinkett talks about how Yoda should never wield a lightsaber, and operated as followed." There's room for me to be wrong tho, so I'll ask, why?
-I like the twist about Rey's parents. I think its an interesting subversion and plays into Johnson's meditating on the purpose of myths. With that being said, her force proficiency has still went unexplained. With the movie explicitly paralleling her and Kylo, maybe its the same explanation for both. Regardless, it doesn't need to be relevant to her parentage, but the audience is still owed something.
-There is some humor in the movie, and most of it flows, but there is one exchange that feels explicitly like it was written by Joss Whedon and that upsets me because it means his cancer is spreading. Goes to to show what happens when you hire him even once. With that being said, TLJ never hits the obnoxious lows, doesn't even come close, I'd contend, to Whedon or Marvel's putrid abuse of bathos. I CAN'T GET INVESTED IN A MOVIE OR ITS CHARACTERS IF YOUR CHARACTERS ARE CONSTANTLY MAKING FUN OF HOW STUPID EVERYTHING IN THE MOVIE IS. IT TAKES ME OUT OF THE MOVIE, WHEDON YOU FUCKING SEX PERVERT HACK. Not *as* bad, but you notice and it triggers you.
-The last minute or two of the film feels totally out of place. The gang are all flying off to their next adventure and it cuts to some fucking kids looking at them down below. It sounds like this was meant to feed into Johnson's point with Rey that these superpeople could be anybody and birthright doesn't factor in, which I don't hate, but even in that light it doesn't fit. Its jarring and its a bad last shot for the movie. Compare it to TFA where you end with Rey and Luke on the island, sure people have strong opinions on the film, here certainly, but you're ending with momentum and building some mystery.
It screams to me of Kathleen Kennedy or Disney butting in and saying "we want some fucken kids!"

Re: Star Whores: Diverse Agenda
I haven't heard exactly what Rey's origin is, but I like the principle of this, I guess. I don't like George Lucas's "midichlorians make the Jedi" Prequel concept.CuckTurdginson wrote: ↑Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:16 pmIt sounds like this was meant to feed into Johnson's point with Rey that these superpeople could be anybody and birthright doesn't factor in, which I don't hate, but even in that light it doesn't fit.

They had all of the fucking time and money in the world to make a puppet Yoda.

Re: Star Whores: Diverse Agenda
I love how they fucked over the people theorising about Rey, theorising about Snoke, people who were shipping Finn and Poe and Rey and Finn. Now Finns with some chink and Rey's got the hots for Kylo Ren.
