Re: Trans-Snowflakes Megathread
I can understand not liking jrpg's, but SMT is not like persona. Nocturne is about the world ending and how you plan to shape it, not like persona where it's high school teen stuff. I have yet to play P5 but it's getting rave reviews.

Nocturne is so rad. And you don't even get the typical JRPG drama because the only permanent member of your party is the silent protagonist.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Re: Trans-Snowflakes Megathread
Nocturne: The world has ended, you're a demon now, you get to decide how to remake the world and which of several philosophical viewpoints aligns with your own. Those viewpoints, traditionally depicted as Chaos, Law etc, are given to you via several people you knew prior to the world's end. They, like you, have been transformed into demons. Your only companions in your journey are other demons you recruit, but this apocalypse world hasn't been so much destroyed as reborn. There's a new ecosystem, new economy, new towns and "people" living out their lives. Isn't it kind of fucked up to destroy all that just to remake a past that's already gone?
Just one of many questions the game asks.
Oh and, well before Nier came along, Nocturne had that twist about what happened to all the souls of the humans who died. I won't spoil more than that.
The combat in Nocturne is a thing of beauty. Flawless even by the usually high standards of SMT, and far superior to Persona. Exploit elemental weaknesses? You get more turns. Up to a max of 2 extra per character or 6 total. But the enemy can do the same thing to you! So it's a fast-paced system where you can easily get wiped if you fuck up.
Oh, and debuffs and buffs are probably the strongest skills in the fucking game, which is so strange for a JRPG. Fog Breath is one of the best moves in the entire game and almost a requirement for any main character "build."
The graphics were unmatched (combined with the art style) for when it came out and the system it was on. The music is phenomenal.

Nocturne is so fucking unique. Even compared to other SMT games. The closest other game to it is probably Digital Devil Saga (1 and 2 are technically a single, connected game.) It has the visual style, but the combat isn't exactly the same and it doesn't have the pokermans recruiting aspect.

Re: Trans-Snowflakes Megathread
SMT:Persona x is actually just Persona x in Japan. (Original Persona was named "Megami Ibunroku Persona" which roughly means "Hey guys, it's a bit different from (S)MT, don't get butthurt if it's not what you expected") The same thing goes for Digital Devil Saga.
I don't know why ATLUS decided to put "SMT" on every western release. Maybe they wanted to appeal to SMT3 fans? That kinda makes sense but it's a bit confusing and hard to tell what's the (spiritual) successor of original (S)MT.

Re: Trans-Snowflakes Megathread
Putting the SMT logo on every game just devalues it IMO. Sort of like how Resident Evil 2 and 3 share the same name with shit like RE5, RE6, Umbrella Chronicles and the Revelations games. If you enjoy RE2 and expect a similar experience from Revelations 2 or RE6, you'll be disappointed.
Persona is a much shallower experience overall and includes a lot of the otaku shit that wasn't in older SMT games. Digital Devil Saga was a spinoff, but it kept the dark, oppressive atmosphere of SMT3. Its mythology shit also arguably makes more sense because it seems to be (IIRC) all Hindu-themed rather than the usual grab bag of deities.

And here I thought you were talking about Nocturne, which is a different, rather obscure game, which made me happy that people here have some taste. Then of course I've realized you are just talking about another japanese game...

Japanime games are superior to the countless Western first-person clones, though.
